FRISCO WORKFORCE CENTER TO OFFER WORKSHOP
ON DETECTING FRAUDULENT DOCUMENTS
Free event comes to the Frisco Workforce Center on Wednesday
(DENVER) -- On March 27, 2008, the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security established new rules that increase the civil fines for hiring undocumented workers. Similarly, individual state legislatures have begun passing more stringent reforms with more extreme penalties. As the number of state laws and administrative rules increases, so do the complexity of an employer’s obligation to verify an employee is legally authorized to work in the U.S. and the consequences for failing to do so.
“These new federal and state laws have triggered a variety of questions from employers who want to know how they can ensure that new hires are documented,” says Rosemary Pettus, director of the Workforce Centers in Eagle, Garfield, Lake, Pitkin and Summit Counties. “Business owners want to know what they can do to deter identify theft. Are there tools that can assist them? The answers to these and other questions can be trickier than you might think.”
To help employers sort out the answers, the Frisco Workforce Center is offering an educational seminar.
When:
Wednesday, October 21, from 9 AM to12 Noon
Where:
Frisco Workforce Center
602 Galena Street, Frisco
The seminar will be conducted by Senior Special Agents Steve Turza and Christopher Carter of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Investigation in Glenwood Springs. With over twenty five years experience in the enforcement of immigration and customs laws, both agents have an ability to make even the most complex statutes understandable. Their presentation will provide ample opportunity for participants to get their questions answered in a clear and direct style. The workshop will cover such topics as how to deter identity theft and the employment of undocumented workers, financial fraud and fighting terrorism.
“The first step in preparing and adapting to the state laws and administrative rules related to undocumented workers is to understand the responsibilities they impose,” Rosemary Pettus says. “Colorado business owners and employers can take that first step by attending this free seminar.” For more information, contact the Frisco Workforce Center at 970-668-5360.
